She lived happily with her family and spent her days napping in sunny spots, demanding treats, and pretending she couldn’t hear anyone calling her name.

The Holiday Plan
When her family went on holiday, Smudge moved into Louise’s house a few miles away. At first, everything seemed fine.
There was food. There was a warm bed. There were humans willing to open tins on demand. But Smudge had other ideas.
One morning, she spotted an open door. Her tail twitched. Her ears perked up. And before anyone could say, “Where’s the cat?” Smudge was gone.
Freedom!
“At last!” thought Smudge. “The world is mine!”
She marched through gardens like a tiny furry explorer. She squeezed through hedges. She inspected flower beds.
She supervised birds. She chased absolutely nothing for twenty minutes. It was the greatest adventure of her life.
The Secret Garden Inspector
Smudge soon discovered that every garden in the neighbourhood required a full inspection. She sat in prize-winning flower displays. She hid behind garden gnomes.
She startled squirrels. She carefully tested every garden chair for napping quality.
Most people never knew she was there. Others found a mysterious grey cat staring through their patio doors as if conducting an official investigation.
The Midnight Hunter
At night, Smudge became a fearless hunter. Leaves were chased. Shadows were chased. Her own tail was occasionally chased.
One evening she spent ten minutes sneaking up on what she thought was a dangerous creature. It turned out to be a football.
Smudge pretended that was exactly what she meant to do.

Weeks turned into months. People began reporting sightings. “I’ve seen a grey cat near the allotments!” “There was one in my shed!” “I think she’s sleeping under my barbecue!”

As the cold months wore on, everyone worried about Smudge. But she was clever.
She found warm places to sleep. She discovered friendly people. She accepted the occasional snack.
She continued her adventures as if she owned the entire district. Which, in her mind, she probably did.

Then, after six long months, something amazing happened.
One day a message appeared on Facebook. A kind person wrote: “I think I’ve seen your cat in my garden.”
The family tried not to get too excited. There had been many sightings before. But this time felt different.
Found!
When they arrived and looked into the garden, there she was. Smudge. A little older. A little scruffier. But unmistakably Smudge.
After six months of adventures, inspections, explorations, and mystery appearances, she had finally been found.
Everyone was overjoyed. Well… Almost everyone. Smudge looked as though she’d simply been interrupted in the middle of another important mission.

Back home, Smudge settled into her favourite spots again. She enjoyed her meals. She enjoyed her naps. She enjoyed being fussed over.
And whenever anyone wondered what she had been doing for six whole months, Smudge kept her secrets.
She simply blinked slowly, curled up in a warm chair, and looked very pleased with herself.
